The Shepherd

AKA The Lamb Whisperer

Ch2
“I make sure our lambs and ewes have everything they need to thrive. I help keep them happy and healthy.”
Ch2 2
The Shepherd
Our lambs and ewes have everything they need to thrive, to keep them happy and healthy.

“We try to get involved as little as possible”. The Shepherd gives us a wry smile. She knows that it sounds counterintuitive and is keen to explain. “One of the most important aspects of keeping our lambs healthy is to limit their stress.” More on that later. But first, the Shepherd wants to show us exactly how you can keep such a close eye on lamb while also making yourself as invisible as humanly possible.

A watchful eye and a helpful hand.

“Binoculars come in very handy” she explains. The Shepherd points to the next field. You’ll have guessed by now that we’re standing some distance from the flock. “The more you observe the animals, the more you begin to know and understand them. You see patterns in their behaviour and are able to detect problems that might call for ‘closer’ inspection. Of course, you can’t do everything at a distance.”

Monitoring is indeed crucial. The lambs are regularly weighed and inspected to ensure they’re thriving in keeping with Lumina’s exacting standards. And although the Shepherd and her team may not get up-close-and-personal with the lambs on a daily basis, the affection with which she talks about them reveals a very real connection. “It’s incredibly satisfying. To see them grow and mature. It’s what makes it all worthwhile.”

Ch2 3

Choosing the path of “least disturbance”.

Happy lambs are healthy lambs.

Happiness is important. “Not just because stress has a negative effect on the taste of the lamb itself, but also because keeping our animals happy is the right thing to do.” Lumina shepherds have incredibly high standards when it comes to animal welfare and the conditions their lambs can enjoy. And that means choosing the path of “least disturbance”. Like watching over their flock from a distance. Because when it comes to reducing ‘stressors’, no detail is too small. And it makes all the difference too. Because care and minimal stress is vital part in contributing of the superior taste, texture and health attributes that Lumina offers.

Ch2 4

The lambs are regularly weighed and inspected to ensure they’re thriving in keeping with Lumina’s exacting standards.

Caring for the whole family.

“Sometimes you need to be a midwife too,” the Shepherd tells us. Before the lambs are born the Shepherd watches over the ewes, making sure they too have the best possible living conditions. “We weigh them regularly, use body condition scoring – essentially checking if they have enough fat – and make sure they’re fed according to their individual needs.” How do you deliver a lamb if you’re trying to keep your distance as much as possible? “We only step in if there’s an issue,” the Shepherd assures us. “Ideally, Mum does it all herself. But if it’s more complicated than that, we’re here to help.”

The Shepherd tells us about the complex process of weaning. “We aim to wean lambs after 90 days. But that really depends on the feed situation and the lamb’s weight.”

Ch2 5

Lumina lambs have the opportunity to run and play. To form social bonds (sheep are social animals), rest comfortably, as well as find shade and shelter when they need it

The perks of raising the perfect lamb.

“Raising Lumina lambs is a unique experience,” the Shepherd tells us. “It feels like being part of something much bigger. I know the work I do here in the fields has a direct impact on the finished product.”

Focus on: Animal Welfare Standards.

The Lumina team is proud to be working to the very highest standards of animal welfare. That means that all Lumina lambs have the opportunity to run and play. To form social bonds (sheep are social animals), rest comfortably, as well as find shade and shelter when they need it. They can always count on the Shepherds – and the entire Lumina team – to make their welfare and comfort an absolute priority.
