Under the guidance of fifth-generation farmer Richard Rutherford, Beltana has undergone a significant transformation over the years, from undeveloped, pest-affected land into productive sheep and cattle country, carefully balanced with environmental restoration.
Nestled along the rugged Pacific coastline north of Christchurch, Beltana is a large family farm with a legacy dating back to the 1860s. Spanning from sea level to over 600 metres, the property is defined by dramatic coastal cliffs, deep ravines, and an intricate network of natural waterways true to its name, meaning “running waters.”
Beltana has a long-standing commitment to sustainability, which sits at the heart of the operation. Extensive fencing has protected over 300 hectares of native bush, creating continuous ecological corridors from the coast to the hilltops. This has enabled native vegetation to regenerate and birdlife to thrive, while active pest control programmes safeguard the landscape.
With a deep respect for heritage and a clear vision for the future, Beltana is farming with purpose for both land and legacy.
